For many hundreds of years, agricultural implements practically did not change their form. It seemed that it was already impossible to improve them. Everything changed when scientific and technical progress came to this area. In particular, the usual rake turned into a convenient device on a mini-tractor - mounted rakes-tedders, which are also called agitators. In this article we will talk about how the tedders differ from the usual rake and what their advantages are, consider their types and tell you how to create a rake-rake from improvised tools and with a minimum of tools at home.
Description
All villagers and dacha owners have to annually clean the area from the fallen leaves. This time-consuming exercise requires several days or even weeks (depending on the size of the garden plot). An even greater problem is the time of haymaking and the need for long drying of hay under the rays of the sun with constant turning and airing, especially when it comes to several hectares of haymaking surface. This work can be facilitated by acquiring a special agitator, which is mounted on the hinged holders to the minitractor.

This device has the appearance of a metal beam, to which several (from two or more) needle wheels, similar to bicycle wheels, are attached to the holders, only with curved hooks of thick wire around the rim. The rotation mechanism is directly connected to the engine using a power take-off shaft. Tedder rakes for mini tractors In addition, the tedders have their own classification, which separates them according to the different functions that they perform.
Did you know? The most ancient instrument of labor, resembling a rake, was created during the time of the Mesolithic (about 15 thousand years BC). This is evidenced by finds on the sites of the sites of the most ancient people.
Benefits
Agricultural equipment is designed to facilitate the work of a person in tillage and other work in the garden and in the garden. Here rake-tedders have indisputable advantages. First of all, it is necessary to note the following indicators:
- high performance (much higher than manual processing);
- ease of storage and transportation to the work site;
- the duration of good and efficient work;
- tolerable cost, as well as the possibility of self-creation at home;
- low cost of maintenance (low-cost parts and spare parts, as well as low weight, which contributes to a small increase in fuel consumption by a minitractor or motoblock).

Classification
According to the installation method, the tedders are divided into two types:
- Wheel mounted. In this case, the tedder is a series of interconnected wheels, each of which has many hooks for collecting and raking the mowed grass or straw.
- Rotary. This subspecies is a single spinning wheel. Long tubes are attached to it; at the opposite ends of the tubes there are several vertical rods that reproduce the function of the rake. Such a tedder can quickly turn over and throw hay to the sides for drying, but it is not suitable for raking in stacks or rolls, because it moves in a circle like a fan, scattering everything to the sides.
Another classification is made in the following groups:
- the nature of the manufacture of the working part;
- by type of traction;
- according to the method of forming rolls;
- by type of attachment.
They can also be:
- Crosswise. The mounting is done in such a way that the whole part of the tedder in contact with the ground is located in a position perpendicular to the pulling machine. In this case, it is convenient to produce raking, tightening the mowed grass or the straw behind the tractor or motoblock.
- Lateral. In this case, the mount is made so that the tedder is located diagonally to the pulling machine, that is, it is located on the side. In this position, it is convenient to make the formation of rolls of mowed grass or straw, which will subsequently be raked with a tedder with transverse mounting.
Did you know? With the use of special tedders instead of the usual rake you can increase the efficiency by 10 times.
Principle of operation
Thanks to the power shaft or chain drive, the torque is transmitted from the main engine to the rotary mechanism of the tedder. Up to five pairs of wheels can be involved at the same time, covering a large area for the necessary work. The special design of wheels with hooks on the rim allows you to hook the chopping blocks of grass, haystacks of straw, a pile of leaves, turning them over, gathering them in a pile or simply raking them behind you.
Such a rake, due to the fixed angle of the needle wheels, can perform a variety of functions. By changing the direction of torque, you can combine functions. For example, if one side of the tedder rake spins clockwise, and the other side opposes it, all the straw, hay, grass, or leaves will gather in the main central gauge, from where they can be easily piled up into a pile. If you need to use the tedder as a wide rake, the angle of the fence changes by 180 °, so that the wheels become in one row and grab everything that needs to be collected from the ground. The principle of such a device is quite simple, so it’s easy to work with.

Operation and care
Due to its unpretentious design, the turner is easy to use and practically does not require additional procedures for care. Operation, thanks to the hinged construction, is possible for a very long time, but the performance will be much higher than if it were a normal rake.
With regard to care, then, of course, periodically you need to carry out lubrication work, generously oiling all the docking and rotating places to ensure smooth running and uninterrupted rotation. The chain drive must be carefully monitored so that the chain does not fly off the gears and does not jam the device. It is better to equip such a mechanism with additional protective screens for security purposes.
In case of malfunctions or breakdowns, replacement of components is not difficult. They are available in the open market, simply dismantled and replaced.

Mounted and rotary tedders with their own hands
Now let's get acquainted with the process of assembling and installing the tedder with your own hands. We consider two versions of the design: rotary and type "Sun".
Rotary tedder
At the very beginning, you need to make a frame of metal tubes, the dimensions of which are directly related to the power and burden of your motoblock or tractor. Equally effective would be to use a round or square pipe. However, it will be a bit easier to work with the latter, since you can better fit the parts, fitting them clearly to fit the size. In this case, the structural feature is to make one of the sides of the frame of the same size with a hinge, and the other to make in the form of a tapered element.
With the help of a cardan shaft, the rotor itself will be driven, which is necessary for the work of the tedder. An alternative to the driveshaft can serve as a used rear axle from the car.
Important! It is not recommended to use the front axle, as it is in the rear axle of passenger cars that you have all the gears and other elements necessary for assembling a mechanical rake.
If you are making a turner that will be attached to the tractor, you should equip the power take-off shaft with a special reduction gearbox. This need is due to the fact that most tractors produce about 540 revolutions per minute, which is too high a pace for an improvised turner.
As the rotor itself, a metal car disk will be used, to the body of which you need to weld 10 tubes of equal length and thickness so as to get a kind of "sun" as a result, that is, the tubes should slightly go beyond the disc.
After the tubes have taken their place on the previously marked car disk, you can proceed to the mounting of the teeth for your mechanical rake. Such teeth can be made from thick metal wire and from durable steel bar. Armed with a welding machine, attach all the teeth to the rotor. That's all. The rotary tedder is ready for testing and further operation.
Classic tedder type "Sun"
This type of tedder involves a three-wheeled design for the power tillers and a five-wheel one for tractors, due to their different traction forces.

To create it you will need:
- metal tubes of square or round cross section;
- thick steel wire;
- several metal sheets about 4 mm thick.
The tine rake construction scheme With the help of a grinder and a welding machine, cutting and fastening steel pipes between themselves, which form the main frame of the device. On the frame of the tubes are attached brackets for the wheels. The wheels of future agitators themselves are made of sheets of strong steel (as an option, the frames from bicycle wheels can be used, but they must be further strengthened with metal rods and overlays so that they do not collapse during operation).

Using thick steel wire, make fingers (hooks) that will become a kind of intakes for mowed grass, straw or fallen leaves. It is better to make such hooks replaceable - for this, use clamping mechanisms or bolt-on fasteners, which can be disassembled if necessary and replaced. For successful installation of such needle wheels it is necessary to use bearings that are embedded in the hub.
Important! It is recommended to use automobile hubs (tapered bearings are best suited, for example, from VAZ vehicles). Thanks to the metal cap on one side and the gland on the other, this unit will not allow the bearings to rust, even if you keep them outside.
The next step in assembling the tedder with your own hands will be the installation of the linkage, with the help of which the docking with the vehicle will be carried out. Such a hinge should be additionally supplied with steel springs for cushioning and special elements of the lifting mechanism, which will tear the rake from the ground in the required places and return them to the place when the machine takes the desired position and can continue to work. Progress in technology and the modernization of labor tools have become indispensable attributes of our daily life. Now you have learned how to assemble your own mounted tedders at home. Now you can significantly simplify your work when it comes to raking fallen leaves or mown hay, you do not have to manually turn the hay from all sides. For you this agitator can perform this long and laborious operation.
