In 2018, Ukraine harvested the worst crop of onions in the last decade.

Last year, onion producers in Ukraine were saddened by the low crop yield. Over the past decade, a similar amount of onions was collected only in 2009 - 876 thousand tons.

According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, in 2018 onion production amounted to 883.9 thousand tons, which is 10% less than it was in 2017 (977 thousand tons). At the same time, there was no significant reduction in the area under onion growing. In 2018, onions were grown on an area of ​​52.5 thousand hectares, whereas in 2017 it occupied 54.8 thousand hectares, that is, the area under the vegetable was cut by 5%.

  • According to profile experts, this situation was expected. Even during the sowing campaign of the last year, many agricultural producers declared a reduction in the area under the bow, since the previous year was unsuccessful in terms of the sale of goods. The quality of the vegetable and its yield have been adversely affected by the weather conditions of 2018.

    Thus, some areas of the South of the country suffered from anomalous drought, while in other regions of Ukraine onion beds damaged by hail. In addition, a decrease in onion exports in the first half of the season influenced the decrease in the supply of local produce in the domestic market. At the same time, Ukraine bought a lot of onions from other countries. Only in January of this year, its imports increased by 1.5 times.
