Zhuravinka refers to medium-late varieties, the period from planting seeds to harvest is from 80 to 100 days. The peel of potatoes has an average thickness, it is painted in a reddish color. A mesh pattern with low relief is visible on the surface of the tubers, but for small root crops the pattern can be very weak.

Eyes on the surface of the tuber distributed evenly. Light sprouts of root crops are rounded at the base, they are covered with thin fibers. The tops of the shoots are small. The root shape is round (ovoid) or oval. Potatoes reach 7-10 cm in length. In one nest, as a rule, there are from 14 to 18 potatoes, but sometimes their number reaches 25.

The weight of tubers reaches 90-160 grams. These are commercial tubers, but smaller fruits may be present in the nest. Starch content in root vegetables ranges from 14 to 19%. The flesh of the potato has a light yellow color. The pulp can be varied (medium to good). Cut root pulp does not darken from exposure to air.

Specifications

Zhuravinka recommended for cultivation in central Russia (in the Volga-Vyatka, North-West and Central economic regions of the country). The natural conditions of these areas are similar to those of Belarus.

The yield of a variety depends on weather conditions, the composition of the soil, soil moistening, the presence of fertilizer in the soil and the quality of the seed material. Subject to the recommendations of breeders you can get up to 75 or more kilograms of tubers from 10 square meters (or 630-640 kilograms per hectare). This potato is beautifully stored in the cellar all winter.

About what conditions are created when stored in vegetable stores and how to do it in the apartment, on the balcony, in the boxes, in the refrigerator and in peeled form.

Taste qualities

Zhuravinka is famous for its high taste. It is recommended to use for the manufacture of potato chips. Such potatoes are good for cooking various casseroles and mashed potatoes.

Country of breeding and year of registration

The Zhuravinka potato was bred by Belarusian breeders more than ten years ago, at the Research and Production Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for potato and fruit-and-vegetable growing. The variety was patented, and already in 2005, Zhuravinka was entered in the register of agricultural crops of Russia.

Features of growing

This variety requires moderate watering (it does not tolerate both drought and excessive moisture). During a drought, the ground part of the plant loses its leaves. At high humidity on the stems and roots can appear late blight.

IMPORTANT: Zhuravinka potatoes grow poorly in soils oversaturated with nitrogen.

In general, this variety is not exacting to the composition of the soil.. Soil before planting should be loose, and soil granules should have small and medium size (0.5-2.5 cm). This is a common garden soil, fertilized with organic matter. In the soil you can make artificial fertilizers intended for potato plantations.

Read more about how to feed potatoes, when and how to apply fertilizers, which ones are the best and why mineral plantings are needed.

And also how to fertilize potatoes when planting.

Resistance to mechanical damage to tuber in Zhuravinki is good. Root crops quickly heal wounds.

Planting potatoes can not be planted very tightly. So, the recommended distance between rows is from 70 to 80 cm, and the distance between the sockets should be no less than 20-25 cm. The depth of planting depends on the composition of the soil. In clay soil tuber planted at a depth of 6-7 cm, and if the soil contains a lot of sand - to a depth of 10 cm.

Depending on the region, the recommended landing dates also change. At the latitude of Moscow and north of the capital, landings are carried out in mid-May, in the southern regions of central Russia - in late April, or in early May.

IMPORTANT: Before planting, to activate and stimulate growth, planting material can be treated with Zircon or Corvitol.

Further agrotechnical methods are standard - hilling, watering, mulching.

Read more about whether hilling is necessary for potatoes, how to do it, and how to do it correctly by hand and with the help of a walking tractor. And also, whether a decent harvest is possible without weeding and hilling.

A ten-year experience of growing this variety in Russia showed that Zhuravinka quite satisfactorily tolerates both low (7 degrees Celsius) and high (36-38 degrees Celsius) air temperatures.

Diseases and pests

Zhuravinka is resistant to scab and viruses X, M and S. This potato is resistant to black leg disease, a potato nematode, and the usual prototype of cancer.

The plant may be affected by late blight. This disease is caused by the simplest microorganisms developing in a humid environment. More tops are affected, to a lesser extent - the root system and tubers. But in general, this variety is more resistant to late blight than many others.

The variety shows moderate resistance to rhizoctoniosis and L and Y viruses. Viral infection leads to deformation, yellowing, twisting of the leaves, as well as rotting and death of the roots. Read also about Alternaria, Fusarium and Verticillis.

The most common pest is the Colorado potato beetle, the larvae of which develop on the leaves of the leaf and quickly destroy it. Also danger for planting may be the bears, wireworms, potato moths, cicadas, moths and aphids. About each of these pests you will find detailed materials on our website.

Zhuravinka every year becomes more and more popular due to its unpretentiousness and high taste. This potato is not difficult to grow, with optimal watering, it gives guaranteed high yields.

There are many ways to grow potatoes. We have prepared a series of articles on this topic.
