Features

The main positive features of the hens of this breed are:

  • Good egg production, which practically does not depend on the season and does not decrease in the winter period.
  • The chicks are very tenacious, well bred both naturally and in an incubator, they grow quickly and fledge.
  • Birds are friendly and easily get along with other breeds, their maintenance is not required separately.
  • Chickens have a good ability to fatten, and their meat quality and very gentle.

They tolerate frost well, so there are no special requirements for keeping birds during the winter period. Wyandot breed tolerates almost any climatic conditions and adapts well to the harsh northern cold.

Wiandotes do not fly, so they can be kept both in cages and in roofless cages. Chickens start laying eggs early. (starting from 6-7 months). They have a well-developed incubation instinct and are caring mothers. Birds of this breed are inactive, calm and thoughtless, this causes their tendency to obesity.

Content and cultivation

Wyandot chickens are unpretentious to the conditions of detention, however, they need to organize large paddocks. But it is better to be careful when pulling the net over the place where the chickens are walking to avoid infection from other birds that may fly there.

As for the house itself, it should be light and spacious. Due to the resistance of the rock to frost, it is possible in the winter not to warm the chicken coop too much. It is better to choose horizontal and strong roosts, as the hens of this breed are rather heavy. On the floor, you can pour small chips, husks of buckwheat and rice, dry leaves of trees.

The litter mixed with the litter needs to be changed in time. And near the house you can install a box filled with ashes and sand, so that the birds dig in it and clean the feathers from various parasites.

To feed the chickens you need food that contains a lot of protein and constantly ensure that they are not hungry, putting food in during the day. Remember that strawberries are the favorite delicacy of the chickens, so you have to fence them in advance.

Food should be stored in a clean, dry room with a normal level of humidity or in tightly closed containers (this will help protect food from rodents that are carriers of various diseases).

In winter, chickens are fed grass to which alfalfa can be added. For the rigidity of the eggshell they are given crushed shells or feed containing calcium. To meat quality, in the feed should be added various vitamin and mineral complexes.

In order to get good offspring, you should only buy Wyandot chickens from proven producers in order to avoid buying infected birds.
